Jack watched as hundreds of saucer-like drones launched from the back of their spaceship. They climbed high up into the atmosphere, heading out to different points all around the planet, ready to begin their searches.

“I wonder why there’s no land here,” said Jack, as the last speck of silver disappeared into a pack of black clouds.

“Technically, there is,” said Vyleria.

“What? Where?”

“Down there,” said Vyleria, pointing at the roiling surface. “There are mountains piled on mountains on the sea floor. But they’re under miles and miles of water.”

“But on my planet…”

“Yeah, but there’s a lot more gravity here.”

“Really? Are you sure? I don’t feel any different.”

“That’s because your spacesuit compensates for it. A far as you are aware it’s as though you are back on Earth, taking a walk down Broadway, the Champs Elysees or Piccadilly Circus.”

“Okay well, what does that have to do with all the water?”

“The higher a planet’s gravity the more water it sucks up when it’s forming, so…”

“The land is swamped.”

“You’re catching on quick,” she said, giving him a nudge in his ribs. “Wait, what’s that?”

“What?”

“A lot of the drones are reporting collisions,” she said, bringing up a 3-D map of the planet on her holo-watch. “But that’s impossible. The scans picked up nothing earlier. They still are; this doesn’t make any sense.”

“Well then, how can they be hitting something?”

“I don’t know. I don’t see anything around us, do you?”

“No.”

“Wait. I’ve got an idea.”

Vyleria brought-up a basketball-sized 3-D image of their spaceship via her holo-watch. It hung in front of them like a silver kite.

“Now what?”

“Watch.”

Vyleria pressed down on one side of the ship, then the other, as the ship swerved from left to right, swooping through the air like a giant albatross.

They’d gone a few hundred feet when the first collision warning sounded – all flashing lights and whirring sirens – followed by a loud thunk as they rammed straight into something large and heavy.

Jack couldn’t believe what he saw.

Before them hanging in the sky was a huge, circular building – all cones and domes and towering, glittering spires – some kind of energy field shimmering at its edges.

There was a civilisation on the water planet after all.
